“cool”, or completely irresponsible?

I’m going with the latter. If there’s zero traffic, fine, but that’s not the case here.

Search for the video - using  remote summon to avoid parking tickets.

I think it’s OK. I mean, it’s not like people don’t do it already with regular cars.

And if there is nowhere to park, the self-driving cars will just keep driving around. The car can let you off somewhere, and then keep circling the block until you’re done.

I’m going with cool, the car is designed to move safely on it’s own in summon mode. If someone just went outside and moved there car 1 spot to avoid the ticket I wouldn’t be mad, they obeyed the letter of the law.

2-hour parking

Well obviously he’s breaking the spirit of the law, in that the 2-hour parking spaces are supposed to be reserved for people coming and going (customers, deliveries, stuff like that) throughout the day. The video states that he’s doing this from his office, suggesting that he’s leaving his car in front of that building for several hours per day.

But if there’s always an empty space nearby for him to move the car to... then maybe he’s not breaking the spirit of why that time limit was put in place after all. As long as he’s not hoarding the last available space, then I don’t see the harm in parking there.

But still, what’s he going to do- sit by the window all day long just to make sure that his actions aren’t resulting in the last space being taken? Doubt it.

I’m going to assume anything the guy in that avatar does is a douche move.

Neither I say. A little too anti-social to be cool, but given the car is designed to be able to drive on its own, also not completely irresponsible.

Maybe it’s safe enough - not sure.

It’s certainly possible its not safe enough, but if not, I’d say that’s on Tesla rather than the guy.

I mean, there are plenty of people who do the 2-hour thing and just go move their car themselves, so...

Summon is for driveways and parking lots, not city streets, but yeah, I guess the likelihood of anything going wrong it pretty slim.

This feature will park Model S while the driver is outside the vehicle. Please note that the vehicle may not detect certain obstacles, including those that are very narrow (e.g., bikes ), lower than the fascia, or hanging from the ceiling. As such, Summon requires that you continually monitor your vehicle’s movement and surroundings while it is in progress and that you remain prepared to stop the vehicle at any time using your key fob or mobile app or by pressing any door handle. You must maintain control and responsibility for your vehicle when using this feature and should only use it on private property .

Yep, and yet, I would still put the blame primarily with Tesla, because they really should be assuming the customer both hasn’t actually read that, and is a moron. If it can’t move safely on its own, it shouldn’t be doing so. And frankly if it can’t move safely in public I wouldn’t trust it to move safely on private property either.

They are still using the word “Autopilot”, so ...

Kinja'd!!! facw > davesaddiction @ opposite-lock.com

Kinja'd!!!0

And I still think that is not a huge problem, because “Autopilot” does not mean self-driving.

I think the recently withdrawn “Full Self-Driving Hardware” option was a lot more misleading, given that they don’t have full self-driving, don’t know wh en they will, don’t know what hardware will be required, and definitely confuses the autopilot situation a bit.

Most p eople hear “Autopilot” and think the car can drive itself. Perception matters.
